Click play below.

The above video is a breakdown of the mechanics of Derek Blacksher.  He’s a good friend of mine. Derek spent 9 years pitching on a professional level.

When you have look at Derek’s  mechanics, you  can see principles that are important for every pitcher.

The Front Foot

When he comes set, his front foot is slightly in front of his body. Also  his eyes are looking over his left shoulder. As his front foot strides forward, you can see he is aggressive but still under control. And when he lands, his foot is slightly closed.

Balance and Rhythm

Derek has  great balance and  rhythm throughout his entire motion. This comes from having strength flexibility and a consistent throwing routine. He is a true professional.

Hips and Shoulders

His hips and shoulders are powerful flexible and the open in the right order. This is SO important. Many young pitchers have the hardest time keeping their shoulders closed when they open their hips. This come with lots of practice and functional strength. Understanding how to correctly keep your shoulders closed when your hips are fully open is a mature and important aspect to a pitching motion. Many young pitchers lack flexibility and strength to accomplish these proper pitching mechanics. When you get better hip and shoulder separation,  expect your velocity to increase in your control to be maintained.

The Power Source

As mentioned in the video, ultimately a pitchers of power source is the ground. Notice in the video how Derek’s backfoot pops off the rubber.   He is keeping contact with the rubber as long as possible. This creates work and his foot that results and his back foot popping off the rubber quickly. This indicates he is getting power from the rubber. And that is the correct source of his power. Do not allow your back foot to lift off the rubber too soon period this will guarantee consistent velocity throughout your motion. Then when it’s time to explode, you can explode with everything you have available. If you stay close appropriately will have no problem throwing fast and having great control.
